The goal of The North Carolina English Language Arts curriculum for grades 6-8 is to enhance students ability to communicate in a society dependent on language through opportunities for the use of media/technology, as well as oral and written language. Through these opportunities to expand the knowledge of language, students will be exposed to real life learning experiences which will improve their ability to communicate through multiple contexts, for different purposes, and to differing audiences.

While the learning concepts through 6-8 grade are relatively the same, students will build on goals and objectives yearly. Through this continuous process of learning and use of prior knowledge, students will become more complex thinkers, writers, and communicators.
